A curious collection of colorful objects catch the eye of passers by on Old Town Eureka’s Second Street. This installation houses the “Wooden Sculpture Garden” of local folk artist, Romano Gabriel.

Born in Italy in the late 1800s, Gabriel emigrated to the United States and shortly after served in World War I. Gabriel then settled in Eureka, working for many years as a carpenter and a gardener, all the while building a multi-faceted menagerie in his own front yard. The “garden” of wooden characters, flora & fauna soon became a local attraction. After Gabriel’s death in 1977, the Vellutini family, dedicated locals, and the Eureka Heritage Society worked to preserve and display Gabriel’s art in a permanent installation in Old Town Eureka. Visitors can view Gabriel’s work today in much the same way they might have 50 years ago, when the sculpture garden stood in front of his suburban home – from the sidewalk.

Photographs of Gabriel’s collection have been exhibited at museums across the world, and included in magazines and books about naïve and folk art. The Wooden Sculpture Garden earned an esteemed designation from California Arts Council.

A popular hiking and cycling trail just north of Arcata showcases the varied landscapes of the Redwood Coast. Taking hikers and bikers across open fields, lush woodlands and a stunning beach, the Hammond Trail is simply amazing. The 5.5-mile segment of the California Coastal Trail is a multi-use trail that’s open for hiking, biking and horseback riding. It stretches north from the Arcata Bottoms up to Clam Beach County Park in McKinleyville. It starts at the Mad River pedestrian bridge, originally the site of a wooden covered bridge built in 1905. It was later replaced with steel and used as a railroad bridge until 1961. The southern stretch of the trail provides panoramas of the ocean and Mad River. Keep an eye out for seals, sea otters, herons, ducks, cormorants and Aleutian geese.

After reaching the town of McKinleyville, the trail meanders through neighborhoods and Hiller Park. Beyond the park, the trail zips through a conifer forest and spectacular bluffs. There are picnic tables and benches situated along the path so you can rest and take in the view. Continuing north, you’ll descend onto a short, paved section that crosses Strawberry Creek. The trail ends with a nice walk in the sand at Clam Beach County Park.

Off of scenic Highway 36 alongside the Van Duzen River lies Cheatham Grove, where you can walk the well-maintained trails through Humboldt’s iconic redwoods. Cheatham Grove is less trafficked than the neighboring state park, but just as lovely. Several scenes from Return of the Jedi were filmed in this grove in 1982. Among the sorrel and fern, one might forget they aren’t on Endor.

Van Duzen County Park is also home to a favorite local campground and swimming hole, Swimmer’s Delight. Over eons, the Van Duzen River has carved into a sheer mountainside, creating several clear, deep pools perfect for plunging. The small campground is first-come first-served only, but certainly worth the early morning alarm to claim your space. Known in times past as Swauger’s Station, Loleta was founded in the 1800s as a railway depot during the boom days of the local dairy industry.
