The Mike Thompson Wildlife Area, South Spit is a long strip of land and sand stretching between the mouth of the Eel River near Loleta to the South Jetty. Looking east from the spit, you’ll see the Eureka waterfront and Humboldt Bay. There are picnic areas at the beach and near the Jetty, which is also a popular fishing location. Locals often bring their horses to ride along the beach. Bring your binoculars, the almost 600 acres of coastal land is a habitat for many species and is an excellent place for birdwatching.
