Don’t blink! You might miss it. The town of Orick flies by on the 101 North towards Del Norte County, but it’s worth a gander. Orick is the gateway into major old-growth redwood territory, and home to herds of grazing Rosevelt Elk (who will almost certainly cross the 101 in front of you, so stay alert). The California Native Wood shop in Orick, with its magical redwood creations, prepares you for what’s to come: deep, enchanted green forests. Be sure to hike the gentle Trillium Falls Trail or trek through famous Fern Canyon. Orick also boasts Lady Bird Johnson Grove, named after the former first lady who championed its preservation. Refuel post-hike at Edeebee’s on the way back to home base.
